About

Birdesign is a small, Cape Town-based design studio specialising in packaging design and brand identity. With 20 years experience in the industry both locally and abroad, I work closely with my clients to create bespoke solutions for their brands.

In the past 7 years I have had the opportunity to work with some great companies. These include IEIT Cyberlogic, Edgars, Dekro, Edge for Men, Cape Union Mart, Advent Wealth, Ackermans, Boland Pulp, Sports Consult Nutrition, Cape Cookies, The Foodbarn, Comessa Foods and the Sunshine Nut Company.

Not all projects are based in bigger brands. A recent project, close to my heart, was to design and produce a flower guide of the indigenous vegetation of the coastal Blaauwberg area. The proceeds of the sale of the book will go towards environmental education by FoBCA (Friends of Blaauwberg Conservation Area).

I have also freelanced for design studios Fab Design, and Beyond the Blue, the Clicks in-house studio.

Previous Experience

Strappmurray Design Consultants, Cape Town (2002 – 2011)
Senior Designer, with the last 3 years working on a freelance basis from home. My main accounts included Woolworths (Hosiery and Homeware), Midas Paints, Plascon, Hamilton’s Brushes, Olli Organic Baby Foods, Cape Union Mart and Ackermans, where I was involved in developing packaging ranges, logo generation, swing tickets, carry bags, and product catalogues. I was required to manage entire projects from brief through to concept presentation, art direction of photography and overseeing repro and on-press colour passes.

Stahl Design, Maastricht, Netherlands (2001 – 2003)
Senior designer. Involved in developing seasonal fashion catalogues, as well as designing swingtickets, POS material and other collatoral for Dutch fashion brands British Indigo and Articles. I also had the opportunity to work on redesigning hosiery packaging for the Hema.

Marks & Spencer in-house design studio, London (1998 – 2000)
While working in the Marks & Spencer in-house design studio, I learned the inner workings of a big corporate and their need to communicate simply and directly to a mass market. There I gained experience in developing packaging for their hosiery and homeware areas, as well as instore décor for the Financial Services area.

Two by Two, London (April 2001)
Freelance designer. Worked on mood boards and concepts for Sainsbury’s toiletries.

July 1997 – July 1998
Freelance designer at various design studios in London. These included the Principles Group, Tinhorse and Wickens Tutt Southgate.
Involved in design concept stages for the likes of Mars, Virgin Bridal Store, BP/Mobil, Elida Faberge and Cussons.

Rose Dendy Young Design Studio, Cape Town (1994 – 1997)
Junior Designer. Accounts worked on included Beacon Sweets, Pick ‘n Pay Christmas Range, and the Cape Town 2004 Olympic Bid.
